Sullivan leads Brown over NU, 73-67

Freshman Peter Sullivan scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to help Brown past Northwestern 73-67 Saturday in Evanston.

Northwestern's Sterling Williams scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the Wildcats (1-3) rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the lead on four occasions. But despite Craig Moore and Michael Thompson each scoring 14 points for the Wildcats, it wasn't enough.

"This is a very tough loss for us on our home court; they deserved to win," NU coach Bill Carmody said. "They came in and it seemed like they were ready to go from the beginning. It just seemed like we were a little out of sync.

"They were real well balanced. Sullivan hit some big shots out of the corner and had a nice drive. It builds confidence. I just thought they deserved to win. They out-played us."

Mark McAndrew finished with 18 points for Brown, including five 3-pointers. Scott Friske had 17 and Damon Huffman added 10 for the Bears (2-2).

Sullivan, who played his high school basketball in Wilmette, hit a pair of free throws with 3:34 left to give Brown a 66-64 lead.

Trailing 68-66 with 31.9 seconds remaining, Northwestern had a chance to tie things up, but Thompson hit only one of two free throws. Brown sank five of its final six free throws to close out the game.

Sullivan finished the game shooting 5-for-7 from the field, including three 3-pointers.

Brown raced out to a 26-12 first half lead, as the Bears hit six 3-point shots, four by McAndrew. The 6-2 first team All-Ivy senior guard finished the half with 12 points. Friske added 13 points to help Brown to a 38-30 halftime lead.

The Wildcats outscored Brown 11-2 to open the second half and take a 41-40 lead. Williams scored 7 points for the Wildcats. The lead changed hands eight times for the rest of the way.

Brown shot 55.8 percent from the field (24-43), including 12-23 from the 3-point line. The Bears enjoyed a 33-23 rebounding advantage.
