Help Cal's All-Star Angels

While South Elgin residents on Juniper Lane decorate the street for the upcoming holiday season, they'll be collecting donations for Cal's All-Star Angel Foundation, named after Cal Sutter who died last year of leukemia. The foundation supports children with leukemia and funds a pair of scholarships. Juniper Lane, which has won the village's holiday light award seven times, also will hold an annual food drive. Goods will be collected in marked containers on the street and sent to the South Elgin Food Pantry. Call (847) 456-5296.

Write-in candidate declares

Kane County Board hopeful Richard Bennett said on Wednesday that he has filed as a write-in candidate for the Republican nomination in Elgin-based District 20. Bennett had filed earlier this year to run against challenger Larry Wegman in the Feb. 5 primary. But Bennett was removed from the ballot this week because of errors on his nominating petitions. Now, he said he hopes to defeat Wegman as a write-in candidate for a chance to go up against the Green Party's Julie Schmitt and the winner of the Democratic nomination for the open county board seat.
