Sullivan leads Brown over NU, 73-67

A Loyola Academy grad, freshman Peter Sullivan, scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to help Brown outlast Northwestern 73-67 Saturday in Evanston.

Mark McAndrew added 18 points, including five 3-pointers, Scott Friske had 17 and Damon Huffman added 10 for the victorious Bears (2-2).

With Northwestern's Sterling Williams scoring 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, the Wildcats (1-3) rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit and into the lead on four occasions. Craig Moore and Michael Thompson each added 14 points for Northwestern.

Sullivan, who played his high school basketball in Wilmette, five miles from the Northwestern campus, hit two free throws with 3:34 left to give Brown a 66-64 lead. Trailing 68-66 with 31.9 seconds remaining, Northwestern had a chance to tie, but Thompson hit only one of two free throws. Brown sank five of its six free throws to close out the game.

Sullivan finished the game 5-7 from the field (three 3-pointers) and 6-6 from the free throw line.

Brown raced out to a 26-12 first half lead, as the Bears hit six three-point shots, four by McAndrew. The 6-2 first team All-Ivy senior guard finished the half with 12 points on 4-5 shooting from the field. Friske added 13 points, as Brown led 38-30 at halftime.

Northwestern outscored Brown 11-2 to open the second half to take a 41-40 lead. Williams scored seven points for the Wildcats, while Brown committed four turnovers. The lead changed hands eight times for the remainder of the game.

Brown shot 55.8 percent from the field (24-43), including 12-23 from the three-point line. The Bears enjoyed a 33-23 rebounding advantage.

Northwestern leads the overall series, 3-2. This was Brown's second game against a Big Ten opponent in the early season, having lost to Michigan 72-57 on Nov. 11.
