Upcoming concerts
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova with Martha Wainwright and the Blue Ribbon Glee Club, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Vic Theatre, 3145 N. Sheffield Ave., Chicago. $25. (312) 559-1212. Saturday's show is sold out.
If you haven't seen the film "Once," you've heard about it. It is the sleeper film of the year thanks to a simple storyline and sublime music courtesy of this duo, Glen Hansard of the Irish rock group The Frames and multi-instrumentalist Marketa Irglova. The pair, who in real life have toured and recorded together, turned out to have natural charisma that translated onscreen. The film's soundtrack has been on the charts since its release and the word is an Oscar nomination for music is soon to follow. Note: Concertgoers are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for a Christmas drive.
The Academy Is …, Armor For Sleep, The Rocket Summer, Sherwood and Cobra Starship, 7 p.m. Saturday at the Riviera Theatre, 4746 N. Racine Ave., Chicago. $20. (312) 559-1212.
Here is a homecoming show from The Academy Is …, the Chicago area band that follows lock in step with Fall Out Boy on the city's breakout emo punk scene. The band is on the road with "Santi" (Fueled By Ramen) a second album out earlier this year. Produced by Avril Lavigne collaborator Butch Walker, the band's rough edges have been somewhat blunted and replaced with a distinctive pop sheen, although thanks to William Beckett's mature and engaging vocals, the group is likely to successfully crossover from the Warped crowd to Starbucks moms.
John Fogerty, 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Chicago Theatre, 175 N. State St., Chicago. $37-$65. (312) 559-1212.
If you've been making music for almost 40 years, you want the late career resurgence currently enjoyed by John Fogerty, the former singer and songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival, the band responsible for some of the most enduring songs in rock history. The nine Top Ten singles Fogerty wrote between 1969 and 1971 are all classics, but his solo career -- dispatched after a legendary dispute with his former band, label and management -- has produced its own set of worthy singles, too. This show is to support "Revival" (Fantasy), a new album.
Tegan and Sara with Northern State, 8 p.m. Thursday at The Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago. $25. (866) 468-3401.
Indie folk-rock duo Tegan and Sara have come up in the world, from playing the parking lot stage at Lilith Fair in the late 1990's to earlier this summer when they released "The Con" (Sire), a fifth album that brings them into the indie pop world, courtesy of cameos from members of Death Cab for Cutie, AFI and guitar prodigy Kaki King. The album branches out from their acoustic origins to incorporate bold pop hooks, intricate textures and brash punk energy.
