Fire loses Guerrero in expansion draft
After three seasons with the Chicago Fire, former all-star midfielder Ivan Guerrero was picked up by the San Jose Earthquakes in Wednesday's Major League Soccer expansion draft.
Guerrero and former New Lenox prep star Ned Grabovoy were among the 10 players chosen by the Earthquakes, who will join the MLS Western Conference for the 2008 season.
During his three seasons in Chicago, Guerrero recorded 3 goals and 16 assists in 74 games played (71 starts). Guerrero, 29, was the Fire MVP and Fire Defender of the Year in 2005.
"Ivan is a very hard working player," Fire coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "It was very unfortunate that an injury kept him off the field for us in the final eight games."
Here are the players selected by San Jose in order: Ryan Cochrane Houston), Clarence Goodson (FC Dallas), Ned Grabavoy (Columbus), James Riley (New England), Joseph Vide (New York), Ivan Guerrero (Chicago), Brian Carroll (D.C.), Jason Hernandez (Chivas USA), Gavin Glinton (LA Galaxy), and Chris Pozniak (Toronto FC).
