Thanks for support of WDSRA athletes

I am still in shock how a conversation I had with Coach Whelan about where I work, Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), turned into a Ss. Peter and Paul School volleyball fundraiser. The eighth grade volleyball teams played to raise money for WDSRA.

I realize this could not have happened so quickly without the willing support of so many: Coach Whelan, Mr. Glowaty, Mike Chiarito, John Larson and the Athletic Association, Nancy Fitzgerald, Mike and Cindy Rafferty, and all the eighth- grade coaches and players who rallied around the cause. WDSRA thanks you all!

WDSRA is grateful for having the opportunity to provide the halftime speakers. Curtis Lease, two time paralympic athlete, member of the U.S. sitting volleyball team and WDSRA business manager, spoke about how WDSRA supports athletes with disabilities. Tyler Gedvilas, SSPP alumni and WDSRA volunteer, talked about a variety of programs he volunteered for over the summer and what an awesome experience it was. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank all of the fans who showed their financial support. I was pleasantly surprised when Mr. Larson, president of the Athletic Association, announced that he had refereed wheelchair basketball in the past, and based on that personal experience could vouch that this was a worthwhile cause and deserving of a matching donation from the Athletic Association up to $500.

I was truly touched by all the fans who gave their support, many who gave more than the $2 admission fee. The total raised was $1,137. I take great pride in where I work and equal pride in where I send my children to school. It was incredible to see these two great organizations join together for a wonderful cause. I can't thank you all enough!
