Glenbard E. student the ultimate volunteer
The standing ovation for Scott Bruzek was both spontaneous and universal during this year's homecoming pep rally at Glenbard East High School.
Normally, you'd expect that for an outstanding state-ranked athlete.
He's not.
Bruzek was this year's honorary football team captain, chosen by players and coaches for his outstanding level of volunteer work around the school, Principal Bob McBride said.
When they announced his name, the kids shot up from their seats.
"He's volunteered for almost every sports opportunity you could imagine: he's managed football, basketball, been an athletic trainer," he said. "He's willing to pitch in for anything."
Bruzek's around so much after hours "people think he works here," McBride said.
Seriously, folks have made that mistaken assumption.
The Lombard senior has managed the basketball team for the past four years, but now he's a bit preoccupied, Coach Scott Miller said.
"I think his biggest concern this year is trying to find a replacement for himself. I keep telling him it's not going to happen," Miller said. "I've been coaching for 21 years and I've never had a manager like him."
And it's not just sports. Bruzek serves on the team that helps welcome freshmen to the school, he's gone on multiple church mission trips, volunteered for the Relay For Life and was chosen as one of 15 senior school leaders.
"Kids recognize him for his fairness, his integrity," McBride said. "Since his freshman year he's been one of the most responsible kids I've ever met."
