Hastert wannabes don't understand job

U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert announced his retirement from Congress and the political literature from those who seek to replace him have been received in mail boxes and seen on cable television.

It appears none of the candidates for the 14th District actually knows what a representative is responsible for as a member of Congress.

Any decision about abortion will be decided by the Supreme Court. The president appoints Supreme Court justices, with confirmation by the Senate. There is no vote in the House of Representatives.

Any changes in the Second Amendment will also be determined by the Supreme Court. There is no reason to mention any views on these subjects.

And why inform voters about sponsored legislation unless that legislation actually became law?

As voters, we really do not care about the number of children, grandchildren or businesses that a candidate has nurtured.

What the voters want to read and hear, unlike all of the presidential candidates, is what a candidate will try to do for the 14th District.

What is your opinion on the Prairie Parkway and why? What about health care and deployment of the American military anywhere in the world? And how is Congress going to pay for the wants of the American people?

As a freshman representative, it could take months before Hastert's replacement is allowed even a key to bathroom. But if you want to be elected, stay away from the national political scene and inform citizens how you will try to improve the 14th District.
