Gunman in teen's death still on the run

Elgin police say there's no mystery in the shooting death of Matthew Kimble more than seven years ago outside a house on Illinois Avenue.

The exact whereabouts of the accused triggerman, however, are an entirely different matter.

Kimble, 19, was shot in the chest April 9, 2000, as he tried to wrestle away a pistol from a man at a late-night party.

Roberto Vences has been on the run ever since he fled after the shooting.

And he likely kept running until he reached Mexico, police said.

Vences, now 23, formerly of Gilberts, has been charged with murder in Kimble's death. He also is accused of attempted murder for shooting two of the teenager's friends that night.
