Crash caused by fleeing driver
Police released new details Saturday about a crash that injured a police officer and left a Chicago man hospitalized after fleeing from police.
At 3:07 p.m. Friday, an Elk Grove Village police officer tried to stop a blue 1989 Chevy Caprice in a residential area of the village driven by Daniel J. Poole of the 100 block of W. 108th Place, Chicago, for failure to display license plates, police said Saturday.
Poole refused to stop for police after several attempts to pull him over. The officer eventually lost sight of the vehicle, police said.
Area homeowners helped the officer find the vehicle, and Poole sped away again, so the officer stopped the pursuit, police said.
Poole left the residential area and drove north on Tonne Road, where he struck a vehicle that was stopped at Morse Road, and fled toward Busse Road, police said.
Police said Poole then intentionally crashed into the driver's side of the police vehicle at Busse Road and Arthur Avenue while it was on the shoulder of the road. Poole continued southbound on Busse to Devon Avenue, where he hit another vehicle and made a U-turn, hitting yet another vehicle in the process, police said.
Poole sped off north in the southbound lanes of Busse Road where he struck a box truck near Greenleaf Avenue then hit an SUV and finally stopped after the vehicle hit a semi-tractor trailer head-on, police said.
Elk Grove Village and Des Plaines fire officials extricated Poole from the vehicle and took him to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove, where he is being treated for his injuries, police said.
Hospital officials refused to disclose his condition late Saturday.
The Elk Grove Village police officer who was in the vehicle that was hit also was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center with injuries. He was treated for those injuries and released from the hospital, police said.
Southbound Busse Road was closed for several hours while police investigated.
Elk Grove Village police are investigating.
