Bond upheld for son of longtime congressman

A judge upheld a bond of $500,000 Saturday when Jeffrey M. Rush, 41, of Lake Zurich, appeared in bond court at the Kane County jail.

A former chief of security for the Fox Valley Adult Transition Center, an Illinois Department of Corrections facility in Aurora, Rush has been charged with 47 counts of felony misconduct with three female inmates between Feb. 1 and June 18 while employed there.

He is the son of longtime Chicago Congressman Bobby Rush.

According to sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler, Rush appeared before Judge William Weir without his attorney, but discussed having his attorney file a motion for bond reduction. His next court date was set for Nov. 29.

Rush is being held in a high-risk cell at the Kane County jail for his own protection because he is a former corrections officer, according to Gengler.

Rush surrendered to authorities Friday after a Kane County grand jury handed down the indictment earlier in the week.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of two to five years in prison upon conviction, though probation also is an option.

Among the charges are that Rush had numerous instances of inappropriate contact with inmates, including authorizing additional release time for one inmate so the two could meet at Aurora motels for sex.

He also is accused of using a state vehicle to meet with another inmate and drive her to her home for sex.

Rush was placed on administrative leave June 22 and fired from his $54,000-a-year job Sept. 10.
