Western Michigan 28, Iowa 19

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- All week, Iowa insisted that it wouldn't overlook Western Michigan.

It did -- and now the bowl selection folks are likely to do the same to the Hawkeyes.

Tim Hiller threw for 367 yards and 3 touchdowns and Western Michigan stunned Iowa 28-19 on Saturday, putting the Hawkeyes' postseason hopes in serious jeopardy.

Chris Kelly kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:13 left and Brandon West added 116 yards rushing and 93 receiving yards for the Broncos (4-7, 2-4 MAC), who raced out to a 19-0 lead and hung on to snap a three-game losing streak.

"It's a very disappointing game," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "They were more ready to go than we were in all phases, and they really outplayed us in all phases."

Iowa (6-6, 4-4 Big Ten), one of 10 bowl-eligible teams in the Big Ten, must now wait and see if it can back into a bid.

Had they won, the Hawkeyes would have likely landed in the Insight or the Champs Sports Bowl. But after dropping the season finale to a non-conference opponent with a losing record, count Ferentz among those who believe Iowa's season is over.

The conference has tie-ins with seven bowls, and eight teams have at least 7 wins.

"That would be my guess," Ferentz said. "If it works out, great. If it doesn't work out, then we know where to look."
