Winthrop whips UIC; Memphis takes title

Taj McCullough scored 21 points, and Winthrop held off a second-half rally by Illinois-Chicago to defeat the Flames 72-58 at the Paradise Jam in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands.

McCullough also had 7 rebounds for the Eagles (2-0).

Winthrop, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, got 13 points from Michael Jenkins and 10 from Mantoris Robinson.

The Flames (2-1) were led by Josh Mayo (16 points), Scott VanderMeer (14) and Karl White (10).

Memphis 81, UConn 70: Tournament MVP Chris Douglas-Roberts scored a career-high 33 points, and No. 3 Memphis beat Connecticut in the championship game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic in New York.

Freshman sensation Derrick Rose added a career-high 24 points for the Tigers (4-0

A.J. Price scored 23 to lead Connecticut (3-1).

Tenn. 89, Pr. View A&M 75: Tyler Smith scored 15 points, Chris Lofton added 14 and No. 7 Tennessee beat Prairie View A&M 89-75 in the second round of the StubHub Legends Classic in Knoxville, Tenn.

Ramar Smith added 10 points for Tennessee, which advanced to the semifinals against West Virginia on Nov. 23.

The Volunteers (3-0) are 32-4 under third-year coach Bruce Pearl when scoring more than 80 points and have won 19 straight at home.

Aaron Smith led the Panthers (1-2) with 21 points.

Texas 73, UC Davis 42: A.J. Abrams scored 21 points, and No. 16 Texas coasted to a win over visiting UC Davis, which is playing its first season as a full-fledged Division I program.

D.J. Augustin had 10 points and 11 assists for the Longhorns (2-0), and Connor Atchley scored 11 points.

Shane Hanson led UC Davis (1-2) with 12 points.

Providence 67, Ark. 51: Brian McKenzie scored 18 points and Geoffrey McDermott added 15, leading Providence (2-0) over Arkansas at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan Puerto Rico.

Patrick Beverley led the Razorbacks (2-1) with 14 points.

Wisconsin 88, Fla. A&M 40: Sophomore Jason Bohannon scored a career-high 17 points, shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range as host Wisconsin beat Florida A&M.

Marcus Landry added 17 points for Wisconsin (3-0) on the second day of the America's Youth Classic tournament.

Larry Jackson scored 8 points to lead A&M (1-2).

Women

DePaul 79, Florida St. 68: Natasha Williams made all 10 of her shots and had 23 points, and Missy Mitidiero sank a career-high six 3-pointers to lead No. 24 host DePaul past No. 18 Florida State.

Williams had 8 rebounds, Mitidiero scored 22 points and Allie Quigley had 12 points and 6 assists for the Blue Demons (3-0).

Mara Freshour had 14 points to lead the Seminoles (2-1).

DePaul limited Florida State's leading scorer Jacinta Monroe (18 points per game coming in) to 8 points.

Maryland 75, Notre Dame 59: Laura Harper had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and third-ranked Maryland tied a school record with a dozen 3-pointers to beat No. 23 Notre Dame and send the host Terrapins into the championship game of the Preseason WNIT.

Kristi Toliver scored 25 points -- five 3-pointers -- for Maryland (4-0), which will play fourth-ranked LSU on Sunday for the title.

Charel Allen led Notre Dame (2-1) with 16 points.
