Brock's basket with 5 seconds left lifts Illinois over Hawaii 79-77

HONOLULU -- Calvin Brock made an uncontested layup with 5 seconds left as Illinois rallied to a 79-77 victory over Hawaii on Friday night.

Chester Frazier led five players in double figures for the Fighting Illini (2-0) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Shaun Pruitt added 15 points and seven boards.

With the game tied at 77, Pruitt missed his jumper, but Brock grabbed the offensive rebound. Illinois called time-out with 32 seconds left to setup a last shot.

Brock found an opening along the baseline and easily made the basket. Hawaii scrambled and did not call a time-out, even though it had two remaining, and ran out of time without attempting a shot.

Bobby Nash had a career-high 30 points for the Rainbow Warriors (0-2), who are still searching for their first win under new coach Bob Nash.

Nash scored eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to reclaim the lead for Hawaii 75-74 with 2:56 left.

Hawaii's Riley Luettgerodt had 16 points. A pair of lay-ups by Luettgerodt opened up a 62-49 lead for Hawaii. But the Illini responded with a 18-2 run, capped by a dunk by Demetri McCamey, to take their first lead of the game, 67-64.

The Illini had trouble from long range in the first half, hitting just 1-of-9 of their 3-point attempts. They finished 5-of-17.

Illinois will stay in the islands to play in next week's Maui Invitational. The Illini will open the tournament Monday against Arizona State.
