Trucker cited for illegal U-turn after motorist wedges car under rig

A truck driver was ticketed for making an illegal U-turn after a man drove into his semitrailer on Waukegan Road at Route 22 in Bannockburn this morning, authorities said.

Bannockburn Police Chief Kevin Tracz said the 21-year-old Libertyville man was heading north on Waukegan Road about 5:55 a.m. when he drove into the semi.

Tracz said the Libertyville man is in the intensive care unit with non-life-threatening injuries at Highland Park Hospital. He said physicians are monitoring the man's brain as a precaution.

"He's very lucky he wasn't killed," said Tracz, who declined to release the Libertyville driver's name this morning.

Craig Burger, 32, of Milwaukee, had been heading south on Waukegan Road, Tracz said.

He said Burger was attempting to turn into the driveway of a supermarket southeast of Route 22 and Waukegan, but backed out and started making a U-turn because the roadway was blocked.

As Burger was finagling his semi on Waukegan Road, Tracz said, the northbound Libertyville man plowed into it with a 1992 Mazda. The Mazda became wedged under the trailer.

Tracz said Waukegan Road was shut for about 1 hour and 20 minutes after the accident.
