Second burglary attempt in a block helps cops, victim nab suspect

Vincent E. York messed with the wrong neighborhood.

Police say the 21-year-old Carol Stream man targeted two homes a block apart near Glen Ellyn to try to burglarize. The residents, though, had other plans.

About 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, a homeowner on the 21W500 block of Monticello reported a man had kicked in her back door. The woman, who was in her bedroom, told sheriff's deputies he still was inside her home.

Deputies arrived within minutes, but the man had fled. As forensic investigators searched for clues inside the house, other deputies canvassed the neighborhood.

One block away, one of the deputies spotted a man who matched the suspect's description fleeing a residence with the homeowner trailing behind in hot pursuit.

Deputies -- and the homeowner -- chased the man on foot. York was arrested shortly before noon.

No one was injured in either burglary attempt. York has prior convictions for theft, retail theft and forgery. He also has a pending battery case in DuPage County.

York, 1473 Oxford, is charged with felony residential burglary. He is being held in the DuPage County jail on a $30,000 bond. He is due in court Dec. 10 before DuPage Circuit Judge George Bakalis.
