Chicago aldermen expected to vote on tax, fee increases

Chicagoans will find out soon how much more money the city wants out of their wallets.

The Chicago City Council is expected to decide today whether to approve tax and fee increases to fund Mayor Richard Daley's nearly $6 billion proposed city budget.

The proposed increases include a boost in property taxes and a five-cent a bottle tax on water.

Daley scaled back his proposed tax and fee increases after hearing from angry aldermen and taxpayers.

He's now seeking $83 million more in property taxes. If the aldermen approve it, that would mean a $60-a-year increase for the owner of a $250,000 home.
