Aurora toddler's fatal fall called accidental
A 2-year-old Aurora boy died this weekend after accidentally falling from the top of a bunk bed, authorities said.
Police were called about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 600 block of North Buell Avenue in west Aurora, where Christopher Young had fallen off the bed, police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.
The boy was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Children's Hospital in Park Ridge and pronounced dead early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing, but the fall appears to be accidental, Ferrelli said.
"There's no criminal activity or foul play suspected," he said.
The top bunk had a railing, he said, but officials aren't yet sure exactly how the boy fell.
The bed had a thick mattress and the railing appears to have come up only several inches above it, he said.
The toddler had been in the care of a 27-year-old male family member at the time of the fall, Ferrelli said.
It's protocol for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services to investigate in such situations, he said.
DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe confirmed Monday that officials are looking into the matter but wouldn't elaborate. He said the department has had no prior contact with the family.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office performed an autopsy Monday, but results are incomplete, pending the police investigation, a spokesman said.
