Wolves rally, prevail in shootout
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Center Steve Martins scored a power-play goal with 59 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, and goaltender Robert Gherson thwarted 4 of 5 attempts in the shootout to help the Chicago Wolves defeat the Rochester Americans 2-1 Sunday night at the Blue Cross Arena.
The Wolves (11-0-1-0) are off to the best start in franchise history and remain one of two American Hockey League teams without a regulation loss. The Wolves' .958 winning percentage is tops in the league.
Gherson made his first start of the season and stopped 24 of 25 shots to earn his first AHL victory since April 15, 2006. He held the Americans scoreless for 58:20 of regulation and overtime.
Martins got his fourth goal of the season at 19:01 of the third period. While on a 6-on-4 advantage, the 35-year-old center took a pass from Alexandre Giroux and fired a one timer past Americans goaltender David Schantz.
Schantz (0-4-1) stopped 39 shots.
