Plane flips on landing; pilot safe

The pilot of a single-engine plane was uninjured this afternoon when his aircraft flipped over while landing at a rural airstrip west of Elgin, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 1:16 p.m. in a field near the Olson airfield, near Route 47 and Kendall Road in Plato Township, said firefighter Dennis Demes of the Pingree Grove Fire Department.

The pilot, 62-year-old Bill Cameron of Elgin, was able to crawl out of the cockpit of his Piper PA-22-150 and was not injured in the mishap.

Cameron told firefighters he was trying to land when the plane became caught in a crosswind, overshot the runway and flipped in a nearby field, Demes said.

The crash is under investigation.
