Downstate groomer pleads not guilty to poisoning dogs
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A central Illinois dog groomer has pleaded not guilty to charges she used antifreeze-laced hamburger meat to poison two dogs owned by a competitor.
Denise "Deenie" Read of Normal is charged with intimidation, criminal damage to property and cruel treatment to animals. The 44-year-old owns Deenie's Bed and Biscuit in Bloomington.
Tim Bowling owns a competing shop, Canine Design, and the two dogs that ate the tainted meat in September. Police say the meat contained ethylene glycol.
Read's attorney, Jason Cannell, says it is likely he will file a motion to move Read's trial outside of McLean County because of extensive news coverage.
