Briefs: Youth symphony opener
The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will open its 2007-08 season Sunday with its Transcend concerts. Musicians will perform Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 and Gustav Mahler's First Symphony. The two performances are scheduled at 4 and 7 p.m. at the Elgin Community Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive. In addition, the EYSO's brass choir will perform "Mutations from Bach" by Samuel Barber. Veterans break ground
Members of the veterans memorial committee in Elgin will host a groundbreaking ceremony with city officials at 11 a.m. Sunday, Veterans Day, in a parking area just west of Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave.
Hunters, test your guns
Hunters can sight in and test-fire shotguns for the coming deer season from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Illinois State Police District 2 firing range at Routes 31 and 20 in Elgin. Reservations are required. Call Trooper Darren Love at (847) 931-2785. Participants must possess a valid firearm owner's identification card and transport the firearm enclosed in a case.
Neubert to host fundraiser
The annual Neubert Fun Fair will run 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Neubert Elementary School, 1100 Huntington Drive in Algonquin. The Parent-Teacher Organization fundraiser will have hay rides, games, face painting, an obstacle course and a Teacher Power Shower where your kids can soak their favorite (or least favorite) teachers. Well/septic info session
The Kane County Health Department will host a well and septic seminar Tuesday at the University of Illinois Extension Center, 535 Randall Road, St. Charles. Check-in and display viewing begins at 6 p.m. The seminar starts at 6:30 p.m. To reserve a seat, call (847) 608-2850 and leave your name, phone number, address and reason for calling. Space is limited. Free water sample test kits will be given to each household free of charge. A short question-and-answer session will be held after the presentation.
