Briefs: Candidate debate Monday

The Kendall County Democrats will host a primary debate between the Democratic candidates running for the 14th District congressional seat at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Kendall County Historic Courthouse, 110 W. Madison St., Yorkville. Participating candidates include John Laesch, Jotham Stein and Bill Foster.

Standards office changing

The office that investigates misconduct in the Chicago Police Department is making some changes. The head of the Office of Professional Standards says her agency will be more active in the investigation of police-involved shootings. Ilana Rosenzwieg announced changes today that include her office dictating how some evidence is collected. After a shooting, her investigators also will immediately interview witnesses at the scene. Her department also could get a new name. A committee has approved renaming it the Independent Police Review Authority. The name change still needs city council approval.

Hunters, test your guns

Hunters can sight in and test-fire shotguns for the coming deer season from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Illinois State Police District 2 firing range at routes 31 and 20 in Elgin. Reservations are required. Call (847) 931-2785. Participants must possess a valid firearm owner's identification card and transport the firearm enclosed in a case.
