DePaul drops opener at Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. - P'Allen Stinnett scored all of his game-high 23 points in the second half, giving Creighton a 74-62 win over DePaul in its season opener Friday night.
Chad Millard added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists to send the Blue Demons their third straight season-opening loss. Dane Watts had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Stinnett held up his hands and shook his head as he banked home his last 3-pointer from the right wing, giving Creighton a 70-58 lead with little more than two minutes to play.
Will Walker scored 13 points and Wesley Green added 10 for DePaul (0-1). Draelon Burns, expected to be the top option on offense for the Blue Demons, scored seven points on 3-of-16 shooting and failed to score in the second half.
Burns missed all five of his 3-point attempts after rimming out a corner shot at the end of last season that would have sent the Blue Demons to the NIT semifinals.
DePaul hit four of nine 3-point shots in the first half, but was 0-for-10 in the second half.
Creighton recovered after missing 14 of its first 16 shots as the Blue Demons quickly built a 20-4 lead.
The Bluejays cut DePaul's lead to four after a 13-point run, and tied the game at 32 when Josh Dotzler was left with a clear path in middle of the lane. The Blue Demons led 38-32 at the half.
Creighton scored the first seven points of the second half, and Stinnett's layup gave the Bluejays their first lead of the game at 39-38.
Stinnett hit all five of his 3-point shots in the second half after missing both attempts in the first.
