Level playing field for fair competition
I agree with syndicated columnist John Stossel that competition would bring innovation, and, possibly better results to elementary and secondary education (Daily Herald opinion page, Nov. 6).
But, if private schools are allowed to accept money that would otherwise be spent on public schools, then the competition must take place on a level playing field.
Private schools that accept vouchers would be required to (1) accept students on a non-discriminatory basis; (2) provide and pay for all special education services; (3) provide and pay for accommodations for disabled students; (4) comply, at their own expense, for all federal and state mandates to which public schools are subjected, and (5) be allowed to expel disruptive, chronically truant, or non-achieving students using the same criteria and due process as public schools.
If those requirements are met, "Let the competition begin."
