See Eliza turn into a lady in musical
When Eliza Doolittle can clearly enunciate "the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain" she's finally on the right path.
That path, of course, is a matter of debate in "My Fair Lady," a musical about the transformation of a woman from a street vendor to a member of cultured society.
Students at Glenbard South High School are presenting the play this week.
"I've wanted to do it for a long time," teacher Laura Samper said. "It's such a classic. The music is wonderful and everybody knows the songs."
There's also lots of chorus scenes, which means the cast includes about 100 students. At any one time, there may be 50 teenagers on stage.
The play centers on an arrogant professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, who takes a bet that he can transform any woman into one who speaks as a duchess. His unwitting charge is Doolittle, a flower vendor who does successfully make the transformation, albeit not without stumbling along the way.
