Student accused of torture with cookies was frat leader
EDWARDSVILLE -- One of two Southern Illinois University students accused of kidnapping, paddling and burning a young man with freshly baked cookies is a fraternity and sorority leader at the Edwardsville school.
Richard Mann is president of the school's National Pan-Hellenic Council. That's the governing body of historically black fraternities and sororities. He says 20-year-old Jordan Sallis is the group's vice president.
Madison County prosecutors charged Sallis and 23-year-old Rosario James with kidnapping, robbery and battery.
Authorities say the two men held and tortured another man last week as part of a drug deal gone bad. The captive later managed to escape.
Mann says the charges are out of character for Sallis.
