C'Ville man accused of setting fire
A Carpentersville man is accused of picking the wrong way to rekindle a relationship with an estranged girlfriend.
Adrian Hernandez, 19, of 941 Cortney Drive, has been charged with aggravated arson, residential arson and arson causing damage of more than $150, court records show.
Elgin police said Hernandez started a small fire about 11:15 a.m. Saturday under a cabinet in the kitchen of his estranged girlfriend's apartment on the 300 block of East Chicago Street.
"It was small, confined to that area and put out very quickly," Elgin Police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said.
No injuries were reported, Dinges added, and Hernandez was arrested later that day after being interviewed by police.
Dinges said Hernandez started a notebook on fire and threw it inside a cabinet. She did not how much damage it caused but said the apartment is still inhabitable.
Still, the most serious charge against Hernandez carries six to 30 years in prison because the fire was started with knowledge that people were present, according to court records.
Hernandez also was on probation for a misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia charge he pleaded guilty to in July, records show.
He is being held in the Kane County jail on $50,000 bail and is due Nov. 16 in court.
