War memorabilia exhibit in Waukegan drawing to close

The last day to view the exhibit showcasing the American Legion Homer Dahringer Post No. 281 and the Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 374 at the Waukegan Historical Society Museum is Nov. 13.

Memorabilia from the exhibit dates from the Civil War to World War II. A letter written by Lieutenant Homer Dahringer is also on display for the first time to the public. The museum is in the Haines Farmhouse in Bowen Park, 1917 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, IL 60087.

The museum is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and also by appointment. Tours and large groups are encouraged to call in advance. Contact the Waukegan Historical Society Museum by calling (847) 336-1859.

Other Waukegan Historical Society exhibits include:

"Snapshots of Waukegan: 1840s through the 1960s." Photograph exhibit located in the City of Waukegan Parking Garage Retail Space at the corner of Clayton and County Street. Twenty oversized photographs show the historical past of Waukegan from the 1840s through the 1960s. There is no set closing date for the exhibit, which is also sponsored by the city of Waukegan.

"Waukegan Listens! From the Phonograph and Radio, to the MP3." The exhibit, located in the Waukegan Historical Society Museum, focuses on the history of listening devices such as the phonograph, radio, 8-track, cassette tape, compact disc and MP3 player. The Jack Benny Radio Program, WKRS Radio Station, and the Fansteel Factory are also featured. The exhibit will be up through June 1, 2008.
