Tucker off-base on DREAM opposition

The Cynthia Tucker column on the DREAM Act does a disservice to those who may not fully understand its implications.

Senate bill S.2205 would have allowed high achieving students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally to eventually earn citizenship. It's a fine idea, and hopefully this will be the case someday.

The problem is with an overlooked detail in the bill. The defeated legislation was written such that after attaining citizenship the student's entire family would have been fast-tracked to U.S. citizenship.

This is simply unacceptable to those of us who wish to see immigrants pursue citizenship through the proper channels.

The bill was defeated because of the letters, e-mails and phone calls made by Americans , expressing dissatisfaction. It was not because of a racist majority's rejection of immigrants.
