Watch out for deer
Motorists are reminded that deer are more active this time of year. The deer are seeking food and mates and pose the greatest risk of accidents. Last year, there were 25,491 deer-vehicle collisions in Illinois. Lake County last year was fifth in Illinois with 588 deer-vehicle accidents. Motorists should be particularly cautious at dusk and dawn and be aware that several others may follow a single deer across a road. Motorists also are advised to avoid swerving to avoid a deer and instead slow to a stop. Drivers should flash their headlights from bright to dim or honk their horn to move deer along.
'Jackie's Magic' tonight
An entertainment event designed to raise food for Lake County's needy is scheduled from 6 to 9 tonight at Warren Township High School's O'Plaine Road campus auditorium in Gurnee. It's called Jackie's Magic 2007, in honor of Jackie Stanislawski, who died in a vehicle crash in 2003. In exchange for a donation of nonperishable food items or cash, visitors will be treated to a 90-minute magic show. This is the fourth year for Jackie's Magic. Jackie Stanislawski was collecting food for the needy before the fatal crash, her father said. All collections tonight will benefit the Warren Township food pantry.
