Authorities end search

The Waukegan Fire Department and Lake County Sheriff's Department have ended their search for a Gurnee man who disappeared Sunday on Lake Michigan, authorities said Thursday. Walter Doroba, 44, was last heard from while he was kayaking on the lake east of Waukegan. He never returned home. His kayak was recovered on the lake. The Coast Guard ended its own search a few days earlier. Doroba will be listed as a missing person, police said.

Horses up for adoption

The 42 surviving draft horses from an Oct. 27 crash on Route 41 near Wadsworth are available for adoption. The Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society in Barrington is running the adoption program. Prospective owners must complete an application, which can be found at the organization's Web site: www.harpsonline.org.

School presents play

Mundelein High School will present its fall theater presentation, "Dancing at Lughnasa," at 7 p.m. today and Saturday in the school auditorium, 1350 Hawley St. The play tells the story of five unmarried sisters, one with a young son, eking out their lives in a small village in Ireland in 1936. Low-cost shots for pets

The Lake County Health Department and Community Health Center will team up with the Lake County 4-H to offer a vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lake County Fairgrounds, routes 45 and 120 in Grayslake. The clinic will open at 9 a.m. for anyone who registers. Vaccination costs for pets spayed/neutered are: Lake County tag and one-year rabies vaccination, $12; distemper complex, $6; microchip, $10. For pets not spayed/neutered, the costs are: tag and one-year rabies vaccination, $31; distemper complex, $6; microchip, $10. Only cash payments are accepted. Pets will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. All animals must be at least 4 months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. To register, call (847) 949-9925.

Lottery for ballot scheduled

A lottery to determine position for candidates on the Feb. 5 primary ballot will be held Nov. 14. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the county government building, 18 N. County St., Waukegan. A lottery is necessary whenever two or more candidates simultaneously file petitions.
