Get correct facts on affordable housing

At a recent "Free Us From Campton Hills" meeting held at the Congregational United Church of Christ, organizers Chris Baldwin and Carmine Julian claimed they would only be giving the group information that was the truth.

Yet, they told the group that the newly formed village must by law have 10 percent public housing and who wants to see a 12-story public housing project go up in Campton Hills? This is not the first time this argument has been used to dissolve the newly formed municipality. However, residents also have heard this from the new current village officials before the incorporation.

This is incorrect information that needs to be corrected at a future public forum by both sides.

Affordable/attainable housing is not public or subsidized housing. The state legislation passed in 2003 sets new affordability standards for municipalities. Only two municipalities in Kane County did not pass the 10 percent requirement and they are working with the county to become compliant.

For those who need more information and for those who should be giving out factual information to village residents, please call Tammie Grossman at Housing Action Illinois at (312) 939-6074 or attend a public forum on these issues from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 10 at Lazarus House in St. Charles.
