Man charged in Elgin shooting pleads not guilty

A Rockford man accused of helping a roommate, who is charged with firing a gun near Huff School in Elgin in September and sparking a restaurant brawl, pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

Larrell Cannon, 25, of 1965 N. Riverside Blvd., Apt. 104, Rockford, faces three to 14 years in prison and a maximum $25,000 fine if convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Cannon, who was on parole for a weapons offense, has been at the Kane County jail since his September arrest on $25,000 bond.

His next court date is Dec. 10.

Elgin Police said Cannon's roommate, Denarrell Mabry, got into a dispute with several men in a red truck around 11:45 a.m. Sept. 8 at Illinois Avenue and Hastings Street. The truck left and Mabry fired a .357 revolver at it, striking it several times, police said.

The people in the truck chased Mabry into Ray's Restaurant at 801 St. Charles St. in Elgin, where there was a brawl and Mabry was hit over the head with a baseball bat, police said.

Mabry somehow escaped from the restaurant and an Elgin officer outside saw him hand the gun to Cannon, police said.

Mabry, 20, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. He also was on parole from prison for a drug conviction and has been held on $100,000 bond since his arrest.

He is due in court today and also is expected to plead not guilty.
