Grayslake Park District notes

Dodge Ball Night: The park district will break participants, ages 8 to 11, into equal teams for a few games of dodgeball, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. today in the GLPD Rec Center Gym. No knowledge of the game is necessary. Cost is $5 for residents and $7 for nonresidents.

Best Defense for Kids: This class is about recognizing, avoiding and escaping from dangerous people and situations, with more than 25 discussion topics and simple, practical, self-defense maneuvers taught in a fun, non-threatening way by a certified instructor. An illustrated home learning guide, certificate and wallet-sized safety card are included. Parents are welcome to observe for free. For more information, visit bestdefenseillinois.com.

This program, for boys and girls ages 6 and up, will take place from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Fridays, this Friday to Nov. 16 in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. Cost is $58 for residents and $73 for nonresidents.

Scrapbooking Crop Club: Join experienced scrapbooker Rebecca Quackenbush as she helps participants get inspired, share ideas and complete scrapbook pages.She will provide layout ideas so participants can complete 16 pages in one evening. This adult program will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. Cost is $10 for residents and $13 for nonresidents.

Making Time for Dinner: This class will help participants learn how to organize the week, plan meals and prioritize days. Participants will go over nutrition briefly, and learn helpful cooking, organizing and shopping tips. Participants will have an opportunity to purchase resources in class to guide in this process. Register for 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday; or 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 26 or Dec. 5. Class is for adults ages 16 and older and will be held in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. Cost is $30 for residents and $37.50 for nonresidents

In-House Basketball: Boys and girls in third through eighth grade can join the park district's In-House Basketball league. Parent volunteer coaches will help teach basic fundamentals, strategies and teamwork. Participants will practice one hour per week and have games on Saturdays. All interested participants must attend an evaluation on Nov. 10 or Nov. 17. Call the park district for evaluation times and locations. Practice days, locations and times may vary. The first week of practice will be Dec. 3; first games will be played on Jan. 5.

Digital photo album: Create a digital storybook using a free StoryBook Creator software program. Rebecca Quackenbush will guide participants through the simple-to-use software from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14 in the GLPD Rec Center Multipurpose Room. If participants have a laptop, they can bring it along, but it is not required to attend. Cost is $20 for residents and $25 for nonresidents.

IRA rollovers: There are a number of options for retirement savings when leaving an employer's plan. Discuss the pros and cons of rolling over to an IRA, moving to a new employer's plan, staying in a former employer's plan or cashing out from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Seidenberg Investment Group office, 229 Center Street, Grayslake. This class is for adults 18 and older. There is a cost of $8 for residents and $10 for nonresidents.

Adult, infant and child CPR: This class is for anyone age 16 and older who would like to learn techniques or refresh their memory on how to save lives through cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Classes will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 14. Class will meet at the Grayslake Fire Station, 160 Hawley St.

Learn how to perform rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and perform one-rescuer CPR. All participants are eligible for an American Heart Association certification that is valid for two years.

Participants must pick up a book at the park district office prior to class. Cost is $32 for residents and $42 for nonresidents.

Parent/Child Turkey Shoot: The Grayslake Park District Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot will give teams of one parent and one child each a chance to competed for a free turkey at 2 p.m. Nov. 17 in the GLPD Rec Center Gym. Teams will be grouped by the child's age. Each competitor will take 10 shots from the free throw line. The combined number of baskets by each team member will be the team's score. Cost is $8 per team.

Timber Ridge trip: Sixth- to ninth-graders can take a trip to the Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva, Wis., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 20 and enjoy Timber Ridge's 30,000 square-foot indoor water-park. Timber Ridge includes two 235-foot-high slides. The Lazy River offers tubing and 560 feet of twists and turns. There are also activity pools for swimming. Cost includes transportation, admission and supervision. Participants are required to bring money to purchase lunch at the water park. Meet at the GLPD Rec Center. Cost is $30 for residents and $39 for nonresidents.

Basic first aid: This class is for anyone age 16 and older who would like to learn techniques or refresh their memory on how to safely administrate basic first aid. Class will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Grayslake Fire Station, 160 Hawley St.

Learn how to implement basic first aid techniques that cover a variety of injuries. All participants are eligible for an American Heart Association certification that is valid for two years. Participants must pick up a book at the park district office prior to class. Cost is $32 for residents and $42 for nonresidents.

Open gym: Come and play informal pick-up games with friends or spend time with family. All equipment will be provided. Family open gym is not a drop-off program. Children 12 years and uyounger must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years or older at all times.

The park district offers the following open gyms in the new recreation center gym:

• Men's 18 and older from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays.

• Men's Over 35 from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursdays.

• Family -- All Ages, from 4 to 6 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Sundays.

• Fifth through eighth grade, from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays.

• High school, 9 to 11 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 7 p.m. Sundays.

There will be no open gym today, Nov. 22 and Dec. 25. The schedule is subject to change. Contact the park district to verify.

Cost (payable at the door) for family open gym is $3 per person. The cost for other open gyms is $5 per person.
