Briefs: Nursing students meeting

Elgin Community College has scheduled a meeting for prospective nursing majors from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Advanced Technology Center auditorium on the main campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. ECC representatives will outline the entrance requirements and admission process, describe the nursing program and explore employment options in the nursing field. Learn about senior services: The Active Senior Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the DuPage Expo Center, 4050 E. Main St. in St. Charles. The event will features product and services for seniors. There is a seminar on driving at 10 a.m., a seminar on investments at 11 a.m. and information on Medicare and Part D at 1 p.m. The expo will also offer free health screenings and flu shots at a minimal cost, and live entertainment by big band vocalist Nora Drysch. Study Christmas Tree Ship

Join author Rochelle Pennington at the St. Charles Public Library for a program on Chicago's famous Christmas Tree Ship at 7 p.m. Nov. 8. Pennington's program will detail one of the most well-known shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. Hear about "Captain Santa" and his yearly voyage down Lake Michigan to Chicago. Pennington has authored two books on the schooner that delivered Christmas trees to Chicago each holiday season before it was caught in "The Great Storm of 1912" and sank. To this day, the ship is still loaded with trees and is a popular dive site. The library is at 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Give blood, get ice cream

Participating in a St. Charles blood drive Nov. 8 will pay off in ice cream. The drive is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the St. Charles Moose Lodge, 2250 Route 38. In exchange for a pint of blood, donors will receive a half-gallon of their favorite ice cream from Colonial Café. Walk-in donors are welcome, but appointments are preferred. Hunt to perform at Arcada

Former "American Idol" contestant and St. Charles native Leslie Hunt will perform on her home turf Nov. 9 to raise money for a health advocacy group. Proceeds from "An Evening with Leslie Hunt" benefit DayOneNetwork, a nonprofit that works with developmentally disabled adults and children in Cook, Kane and Kendall counties. The concert starts at 7:15 p.m. at the Arcada Theater, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles There also will be information booths and a raffle for prizes including a $100 gift card and three-day trip to Las Vegas.
