Success story: Winston Campus Junior High

Winston Campus Junior High

Town: Palatine

Number of subgroups for which it's held accountable: Six

Success story: Well over half of the students in each subgroup met or exceeded standards this year. More than 70 percent of low-income students specifically made the grade in math and reading. It's the second year in a row the school has passed.

How it got there: Besides the hard work from students and staff, Principal Mary Salsinger said the school is using a program called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, which helps identify students who are struggling from both a behavioral and academic standpoint.

What it plans for next year: School is getting involved in "No Excuses University," which helps get students more aware of college and what is needed to get there.

Quote: "We have a teaching staff that is very dedicated to meeting the needs of every student." -- Principal Mary Salsinger
