Batavia Yankees win Majors Tournament

The Batavia Youth Baseball Yankees swept a doubleheader to capture the Batavia/Geneva Majors fall baseball championship.

Facing the Batavia Red Sox in Sunday's first game, the 10- and 11-year-olds saw a two run lead evaporate and the game went to extra innings. Two innings later, Brendan Kilgallen scored the go-ahead run. Behind Matt Jones' pitching, the Yankees held on to clinch the game.

The Yankees then faced off against the Geneva Brewers. In the bottom of the last inning, with the score tied, Justin Prince beat out a bunt that stopped in fair territory, stole second and third bases, and was driven in as the winning run by Jones.

In addition to Prince and Jones, Jacob Toth, Jordan Zwart and Tucker Knox provided strong pitching, backed up by solid defense from Ryan Mexin and Joey White. Jared Kramer and Kevin Fiddelke hustled all season and were key players for the team. Brendan Kilgallen got on base at critical times, and Nathan Huxtable's bat came alive for the playoffs.

Yankees coach was Doug Jones.
