Harper's going bowling at N. Iowa

Harper College's football program is going bowling for the first time in three years.

The Hawks (6-4) clinched a spot in one of two Graphic Edge Bowl games Nov. 18 at the University of Northern Iowa with their 51-33 Midwest Football Conference East Division playoff win Saturday at College of DuPage.

The Hawks' first win in six playoff games at COD put them in Saturday's 7 p.m. MFC East championship at Joliet Junior College (7-3).

Freshman Garrett Barnas set school records Saturday for total offense (483 yards) and rushing yards by a quarterback (159). Barnas was 26-for-37 for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns to become the sixth Harper passer to surpass 2,000 yards in a season with 2,296.

Harper never trailed as it rolled up 574 total yards and avenged a 43-27 regular-season loss. Barnas threw touchdown passes to Sean Stochl, Ian Shelton and Brian Mitz (4 catches, 174 yards), rushed for a 5-yard score and caught a 6-yard pass.

Senica Jackson rushed for two 3-yard TDs and caught 9 passes for 125 yards. Conant grad Ryan Fillingham kicked 2 field goals and his 42-yarder gave Harper a 17-14 second-quarter lead it never lost.
