District 220 group ready to present plan

After more than eight months of meetings, the Barrington Area Unit District 220 committee set up to address redistricting is ready to show what it's come up with.

Tuesday, the committee will hold a special public meeting to present proposed elementary enrollment and attendance boundary changes -- including draft maps -- and the rationale behind them.

"We will give everyone a pulse of what the committee has accomplished so far," said Joe Ruffolo, co-chairman of the enrollment monitoring committee.

The 38-member, community-based panel was formed to monitor attendance fluctuations and suggest possible boundary changes. A final decision will be made by the school board.

Elementary attendance boundaries are the panel's first task since some schools have more of a space crunch than others.

The committee has studied laws pertaining to attendance boundaries, along with current and projected enrollment numbers, to try and come up with the best long-term boundary solution.

"It has been a very long process to try and learn what all the data means," Ruffolo said.

So residents can be prepared for Tuesday's meeting, a copy of the three different boundary maps under consideration have been placed on the district's Web site to be reviewed. Each shows several neighbors being reassigned to different schools.

"We didn't want to keep any secrets," Ruffolo said of posting the maps online. "We are trying to be as up front with people as possible."
