Guardian Angles gives timely donation

With the financial cupboard for the Shelter Assistance Committee just about bare, the agency's president, Barney Quandt, said a fund-raiser organized by Guardian Angels Oct. 5 was "a fairy tale" that became a dream come true.

"We had a meeting last week and realized that we really had no money left, and then the Guardian Angels come along with perfect timing and this wonderful donation," Quandt told supporters at the annual Guardian Angels golf outing at Rich Harvest Farms.

Guardian Angels, a group of area businessmen organized eight years ago at St. John Neumann Church in St. Charles, donated $10,000 to the Shelter Assistance Committee and another $10,000 to the Living Well Center in Geneva, which helps people afflicted with cancer understand the best ways to cope with their illness.

The Shelter Assistance Committee provides one-time funding assistance "when deserved and needed" for those who need help in making a rent or mortgage payment, Quandt said. The goal of the group is to keep people in their homes, rather than having them go to a homeless shelter.

Quandt said that the donation made by Guardian Angels keeps the committee strong enough to continue helping families, while noting that the committee aided 51 families last year.

Organizers thanked Rich Harvest Farms owner Jerry Rich for supporting the fund-raising efforts by hosting the event at his private golf course.
