Name Route 173 for the 173rd

On Oct. 17, at a regularly scheduled meeting, the Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County passed by unanimous vote a resolution urging support for the naming of Route 173 in honor of the Illinois Veterans who served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

The Brigades lineage dates back to World War I and Word War II. Commission President John Nelson, a World War II veteran, feels that the naming is an appropriate recognition for those who served with honor and distinction as members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

The 173rd Airborne Brigade as a unit conducted the only combat airborne assault during the Vietnam war. The Brigade continues to give honorable and outstanding service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The VAC of Lake County is a distinct and separate unit of local government, which is funded by the Lake County government, according to state law. The commission represents the 43,000 veterans of Lake County with a delegate from each recognized veterans organization serving on the commission.
