Two men were arrested in a string of burglaries committed over the past four months, Elgin police said Thursday.

Victor Alvarez, 28, homeless, of Elgin has been charged with 10 counts of burglary, police said.

Police responded to a burglary in progress at the Citgo gas station, 640 Villa St., Elgin, at 4:15 a.m. Thursday and saw Alvarez inside the business, police said.

He fled but was caught a short distance away, police said.

In addition to Thursday's burglary, Alvarez has been charged with the burglaries of the same gas station on Oct. 1, the Citgo at 1580 Larkin Ave. on July 25 and Sept. 12 and the Citgo at 282 Dundee Ave. on Aug. 10 and Sept. 19.

Police also say Alvarez burglarized Walgreens at 650 Villa St. on July 17, the Marathon gas station at 1126 Larkin Ave. on Aug. 5, Price Rite at 180 Kimball St. on Aug. 12 and Gloria's Mini-Mart at 401 Villa St. on Sept. 17.

Police also arrested Alejandro Martinez, 22, whose last known address was on South Street in Elgin, who was wanted on warrants.

Martinez was accused of robbing a clerk at the Illinois Vehicle Insurance Agency, 12 N. State St., Elgin and the Sergio Furniture Co., 465 Summit St., Elgin, both in July.

Victor Alvarez and Alejandro Martinez will appear on Oct. 26 at bond hearings at Elgin Branch Court.
