Lakeshore work to begin
Openlands, a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving and enhancing public open space in northeastern Illinois, announced Thursday the Grand Victoria Foundation's $4 million pledge, including a $1 million challenge grant, will kick-start restoration of the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve. The preserve is a pristine 1-mile stretch of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline at the southern end of Fort Sheridan in Highland Park. Because of its military affiliation, the area has been closed to visitors since the late 1800s. The preserve is home to more than 100 species of migratory birds and rare plant life. Restoration includes developing a series of hiking and biking trails. The preserve is scheduled to open in phases. The $4 million contribution by the Grand Victoria Foundation is the largest single restoration gift ever given by the philanthropic organization, established in 1996 by the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin. It also is the largest single gift ever received by Openlands.
