Route 60 construction relief in sight

Some potential relief will be in store for drivers who need to reach a Lake Forest business park during a reconstruction and widening of the Route 60 bridge over the Tri-State Tollway.

Permission was granted today for a temporary back-door access road leading from the Tri-State Tollway's Lake Forest oasis north of Route 60 to Conway Park. The office campus' main entrance is off Route 60, just east of the planned bridge work and the tollway.

Illinois Toll Highway Authority board members approved the temporary road at a meeting today.

Plans call for the temporary direct road to Conway Park - complete with toll collection booths - to be open by the time the Route 60 bridge work begins next month until it ends in December 2008.

As part of the deal, Lake Forest will contribute 1.5 acres for an oasis parking lot expansion after the temporary road is closed. The city also will pay $100,000 to the tollway to remove the collection booths.

"It is good to see the Lake Forest agreement worked out," tollway board Chairman John Mitola said.

Major Conway Park tenants include TAP Pharmaceutical Products Inc., Trustmark Cos., Pactiv Corp. and Brunswick Corp. About 36,000 vehicles cross the east-west Route 60 bridge daily.
