Pizza place gets warm welcome from the locals

If you've been missing Augie's Pizza since it closed in March, you'll find that the replacement is just as good.

Artistic Cuisine is now open in that spot, 16 S. Bothwell St. And judging from the crowd and constant phone calls Saturday night, people are happy to get a local pizza spot back.

The menu offers a lot of usual pizzas, as well as specialty ones. There are also calzones, sandwiches, pasta dishes and a whole menu of empanadas.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Farmers market finale: The last Palatine Farmers Market is Saturday, and besides all the usual goodies, there will be trick-or-treating. The vendors will offer treats and games for children, and kids and pets are encouraged to come in costume. The market is in the Metra station parking lot on Wood and Smith streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be tons of fresh fall produce and other goods to stock up on.

Spa day for pets: Muddy Paws in Palatine is having a Halloween Spa Day this weekend. There will be a dog wash, canine massage and parent chair massage offered at the store, 20429 N. Rand Road, from 2 to 6 p.m. There's a fee for all services, but discounts do apply for combination packages. Dogs are encouraged to come in costumes to receive a treat bag. Free film screening: The film "Green: The New Red, White and Blue" will be shown at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church in Palatine at 7 p.m. Nov. 9. A discussion will follow the movie, which is free and open to the public. The film presents potential solutions to global warming, promoting the idea that moving to a low-carbon economy is important for stimulating the economy and maintaining national security. Party, Halloween-style: The Palatine Park District will hold its annual Halloween Party on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Community Center, 250 E. Wood St. The party is open to kids ages 1 to 10 and will feature a jack-o-lantern gym, challenging games, ghoulish goodies and a creative crafty table. Tickets can be purchased at the Community Center or Birchwood Recreation Center, 435 W. Illinois Ave. The cost is $4 for residents, $5 for non-residents and $6 at the door.
