Thanks for support during identity crisis
As village clerk and private citizen of Algonquin I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has stepped forward to offer support and well wishes during this difficult moment in my life.
As most know, I discovered a man from Springfield was arrested by federal authorities on child pornography and sexual charges. He was a clown and entertainer who went by a clown name I have used for the past 24 years, Klutzo.
Since I was the only one that I know of to have a Web site by that name, there were bloggers using the Internet that did not do their homework and investigate properly as to the true identity of my clown Klutzo.
They actually copied my Web site and pictures, and then placed them on their blog Web sites.
I was greeted by vile e-mail and blog sites accusing my Klutzo of unspeakable acts toward children. Devastated and humiliated, I immediately took my site off the Web.
By then the damage was done. It was a living nightmare. I was afraid of the damage it could do to not only my reputation but also to this great village.
Thanks to news articles by our local papers, the story was picked up by the local TV networks and nationally by CNN.
I know there are still people who have not realized my situation, but I have been overwhelmed by the amount of support I am receiving by e-mail and phone, not just from the Chicago area, but also across the country.
Folks from just ordinary citizens to fellow public officials to professional clowns and their families have written e-mails. I'm truly touched by the good that is within the people of our fine nation.
I will have to part with the name Klutzo as it has been tainted forever. It is a shame, since he has been part of the family and village for all these many years and we think of him in the third person.
But I also realize, with the help of my friends, that clowning is still in my blood and I cannot or should not give it up. I wish to get my thoughts together and make plans for the future.
My sincere thanks and appreciation to those who immediately responded to the mistaken identity.
A very special thanks goes to Village President John Schmitt and Police Chief Russ Laine, who had the kindest words for me in the media.
What can I say about our village staff and closest friends, too numerous to name, but came to my aid in defending my reputation?
And my wife, Sharon, has been a rock of strength for me during these past five days, as have my children, Kristen and Scott.
Again, thanks to all.
