Mundelein to celebrate Red Ribbon Week
Bingo, a student dance and a basketball tournament are among the activities planned for Mundelein's Red Ribbon Week festivities.
The national event was designed for communities to make a public statement against illegal drugs. It was founded in 1988 by a group called the National Family Partnership.
Red Ribbon Week honors a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was kidnapped, tortured and murdered in Mexico in 1985. To remember the agent, people wore small badges of red satin.
Mundelein's ribbon-related activities actually began Sunday when volunteers placed red ribbons throughout the village.
It continues today with a three-on-three basketball tournament from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley St. Only Mundelein High students can play in the tournament.
After a day off Tuesday, activities will resume Wednesday with bingo from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Mundelein's senior center, 1200 Regent Drive.
Special red-ribbon bowling is set for Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lakeside Lanes, 900 S. Lake St.
To reserve a spot for bowling, call Mundelein police officers Stephanie Jones or Kathleen Smith at (847) 968-4600.
On Friday, West Oak Middle School will hold a dance for area sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students. The dance is set to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at West Oak, 500 Acorn Lane. Kids must present a school ID to attend.
Finally, volunteers will meet at the police station at 10 a.m. Saturday to take down all the Red Ribbon Week paraphernalia.
