Police charge teens in young boy's death
Two teens have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 10-year-old boy who was shot while on his way to buy an after-school snack, Chicago police said Saturday.
The youths, ages 17 and 14, are accused of helping to provide the gun used in the fatal shooting, but neither is believed to be the shooter, police spokesman John Mirabelli said.
Police identified one of the suspects as Steven McCaskill, an alleged gang member; police did not identify the 14-year-old, who was charged as a juvenile.
Family members have said Arthur Jones was headed to buy an after-school snack Wednesday when he was shot in the neck; he died a short time later at a hospital. Police said Jones was not the intended target.
Police said McCaskill was believed to be involved in a dispute with members of a rival gang on Chicago's South Side when violence erupted. He is not the alleged shooter, but police said he admitted to passing the weapon.
A Cook County judge on Saturday ordered McCaskill held on $500,000 bond; the 14-year-old was due in court on Monday, Mirabelli said.
Police said their investigation is continuing.
