Rolling Meadows 38, Hersey 0

Rolling Meadows running back David Ubert made the most of his senior night start.

Ubert rushed for 87 yards and 2 tackle-breaking touchdowns as the Mustangs (8-1, 4-1) shook off the effects of last week's tough loss to Buffalo Grove to score a 38-0 win over visiting Hersey.

Classmate QB Ben Sabal also rushed for a touchdown, and Mikal Johnson made an impressive return after missing 2 games to give the Mustangs a share of the Mid-Suburban East title.

Johnson scored the game's first TD on a 7-yard cutback run early in the first quarter, and made an impact on defense by recording 2 sacks and putting constant pressure on Hersey (0-9, 0-5) quarterback Scott Kinsel.

"This feels great," said Ubert, who gave the credit to his offensive line, including seniors Timothy Grant and Nicholas Strzelecki. "We didn't think we were going to lose this season, so last week (against BG) was kind of devastating. But we stepped it up tonight."

"The seniors came out knowing there was a possibility this could be our last home game," added Grant. "The juniors helped pick the seniors up, and the seniors picked up the juniors. We played as one."

Ubert's 12-yard run around left end and a 30-yard Kevin Serna field goal gave Meadows a 17-0 halftime lead.

Hersey was held to under 100 yards of total offense by a Meadows defense anchored by linebacker Kelly Jauch, but the Huskies had a chance in the second quarter after senior Kevon Dolan recovered a Mustangs fumble.

The Huskies drove to the Meadows 17 but the drive stalled.

An 8-yard Sabal touchdown run, a 9-yarder from Ubert and Jim Garoppolo's 3-yard TD run on a broken play completed the Meadows scoring, while defensive backs Stan Pheteau and Serna recorded fourth- quarter interceptions.

"Some guys who usually don't start got their opportunities on senior night, and they made the most of them," said Meadows coach Doug Millsaps. "Ubert has been doing great in practice and playing well in the JV games, and he ran hard tonight."

Sabal, who finished 7-of-16 for 70 yards through the air but was the victim of several drops, thought the Mustangs rebounded well after the loss to BG.

"We re-established ourselves," said Sabal. "We wanted to prove that last week was a fluke."
